Feeling Overwhelmed by Fixture Decisions? Here’s a Simple Way to Start.

If you’re planning a new space (or refreshing the one you have), it can feel like you’re standing at the edge of a very big ocean. There are so many fixture options that it’s easy to get stuck before you even begin. What do I need? What will it look like? How do I choose without making expensive mistakes?

Take a breath. You don’t need a perfect plan to begin. You just need a starting point. Below is a simple way to move from “overwhelmed” to “clearer,” one step at a time.

Most people begin by trying to choose products right away, but the easier path is to begin with inspiration. That’s why we always recommend starting with our current catalog here. Don’t treat it like a checklist. Treat it like an idea book. As you flip through, notice what you’re drawn to: clean and modern, warm and traditional, playful and eclectic. Screenshot a few pages and jot down what you like about them. Those little clues add up quickly.

If you’re in more of a dreaming mood — the “what could this space become?” stage — our dimensional slatwall catalog is a fun one to explore here. It’s especially helpful for imagining feature walls, storytelling zones, and the kind of flexible merchandising areas that make a shop feel alive.

And if you want the most direct route to motivation, head straight to our indie inspiration photos here. Real spaces are the best teachers. When you’re looking at photos, pay attention to the things that shape customer experience:

  • How wide the aisles feel

  • Where face-outs are placed

  • Where customers naturally stop

  • How the room balances open space with full shelves

Often, you’ll realize you’re not just reacting to fixtures — you’re reacting to the flow.

Once you have a sense of style and direction, colors become much easier. Our standard colors are listed here, and they’re a great way to keep your space cohesive. Color can feel like a small detail, but across an entire room it becomes part of the atmosphere. If you’re unsure, a timeless neutral as the foundation tends to age well, and you can add personality through signage, lighting, and display moments that are easy to change over time.

At this point, most customers start wondering: “Okay, but how do I actually plan the layout?”

There are two great ways to approach this, depending on how your brain works. If you have a floorplan with dimensions, we can take that and create a layout that shows your vision brought to life — placing fixtures and helping you see what the space could look like before anything is built. This is a great option if you feel overwhelmed, don’t want to guess, or just want someone experienced to help you connect the dots.

If you do love planning, you can absolutely sketch it yourself and tell us what you’d like to do. A hand-drawn plan works. A rough digital layout works. What matters most is understanding the “zones” you’re trying to create.

Instead of focusing first on individual pieces, think about the areas your space needs most, such as:

  • New releases

  • Depth and backlist browsing

  • Kids’ areas

  • Gifts and sidelines

  • Checkout and wrap-up space

When you think in zones instead of individual pieces, the fixture decisions get simpler fast.

Budget is another place where people sometimes freeze — but it doesn’t have to be. If you have a budget in mind, we can work to it and help you prioritize what matters most. That usually means starting with the fixtures that carry your core inventory and shape daily function, then layering in the pieces that elevate merchandising and storytelling. In other words: build the foundation first, then add the “wow” moments as you’re able.

One last (very important) mindset shift: try not to think of fixtures as something you should pay for out of pocket just to “get it done.” Franklin Fixtures are built as long-term assets — they hold value, they support sales and flow, and they’re designed to endure. Many owners choose to treat them like the investment they are and explore financing options, including SBA loans like a 504 loan.

We also recorded a special podcast episode on financial strategies that can help you think through funding in a smart, sustainable way.

And if you’d like encouragement and practical ideas while you’re planning, our Two Minute Tweaks is exactly that: a short, helpful hack or perspective. You can subscribe here or find it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.

If you’re still in the dreaming stage, you’re not behind. If you’re in the planning stage, you’re in the right place. And if you’re in the “I don’t even know what questions to ask yet” stage… we get it. Start with inspiration, notice what you love, and let that guide your next step.

We hope these resources help you shape your dreams. We’re here to help.
